You Can Actually Improve Your Reading Speed

Are you a slow reader? Do you find yourself left behind during office presentations or college lectures? Many people would like to improve their reading speed, but do not know how. There are many speed reading methods that you can try, but not all of them are effective, and some will actually slow you down. You can figure out what type of program will work best for you by considering your needs and what circumstances you read in most frequently. There are some reading programs that make unrealistic claims of reading speed, you can avoid these by knowing what speeds humans are capable of reading at.
There are a lot of different problems that can slow down your reading. For some people, skipping back in the text and rereading parts can make them take much longer to finish a page. For other people, reading out loud or moving their mouth while reading can cause very slow reading. Some people have trouble focusing their eyes, others have trouble focusing their minds. A few of these problems can be easily identified by the reader or an observer. Other issues can be very difficult to pinpoint. In order to improve your reading speed, it is necessary to identify what is causing you to read slowly.

If you cannot readily identify why you read slowly, you may want to invest in a speed reading system. Try avoid the one-size-fits-all methods, they may not actually help you unless they address your specific problems. Computer reading software can be a great investment, but many programs still use a one-size-fits-all method. Look for a program that addresses many potential problem areas, and also analyzes your abilities in these areas. Some software can actually track your progress and let you see how you have improved. The advantage to this type of program is that you won’t spend hours practicing a skill that you have already mastered. A program that addresses the differences between printed text and computer screens can be a big advantage to those who do most of their reading on a screen. You need different skills to read text on a screen, not only on the computer, but also on powerpoint presentations and class lectures.

When you go looking for a speed reading system, you need to know how fast a person can realistically read. Some systems make really fantastic claims that have been disproved in scientific studies. If a reading method claims that you will be able to read an whole page of text in mere seconds, or read an entire book by flipping the pages, it is making false claims. In carefully controlled studies, human reading speeds have been measured. Slow readers can read at about 200 words per minute, or even less. Naturally fast readers can read 600 words per minute. Fast readers who practice regularly can attain speeds of over 1,000 words per minute. In a study performed by NASA, people who claimed to be able to read 25,000 words per minute were found to read slower than normal people.
