Expand your horizons by building better vocabulary

There are more than six hundred thousand words in the English language, but an ordinary person uses just a fraction of them. Of course, it is not necessary (and most probably it’s even impossible) to know all those words to stand out of the crowd, but if you want to convey your ideas, thoughts and opinion on a higher level, if you want to expand the horizons of expressing yourself, it is highly recommended that you accept building better vocabulary as a part of your daily activity.

Building your vocabulary is a life time process, it’s not something that can be done as a short term course. But at the same time it is a fascinating journey into the world of spoken and written language, and once you get into it, you’ll have a chance to discover more and more interesting words to use in various situations.

Do not ignore unfamiliar words when you come upon them while having a conversation. Before anything else, try to figure out what it means from the situations the word is used in, or from the context. Very often it is easier than you might think, and if you direct your mental processes to remember the word instead of ignoring it, building better vocabulary will come natural and easy. Also, there is nothing wrong in asking about the meaning of a word you do not know. Of course, if you can expect a scornful reaction from a person you talk to, it is better to keep the word in mind and consult the dictionary later.

Do not underestimate reading: books are still powerful powerful tools to help in building better vocabulary, and they will always be so. Reading a book, you will have an opportunity to store a larger number of new words as you will have a visual image of them. Very often a person can memorize not only the context of the word, but also its placement on a page.

There is no need to read fast unless your purpose is mastering a speed reading technique. Building better vocabulary might slow down your reading significantly as you get distracted when looking for the meaning of new words in a dictionary. However, it will not take you long to notice an improvement: you’ll become more articulate and expressive in conversations and public speaking.

And last but not least, do not forget about the power of positive thinking, enthusiasm and positive attitude. Enjoy the process of learning , and you’ll find it rather rewarding even irrespective the results.
